Steely Danielle Hussalonia

OMG
Bring up Steely Dan in casual conversation with the discerning music listener and expect something akin to one of two things: a wide-eyed sermon about how the "mu major chord" represents Steely Dan's subversion of pop music at its tonal core, or alternately, a hard blow to the kidneys. With their light-jazz chords, meticulous arrangements, dry recordings and even drier sense of humor, Steely Dan has a tendency to divide a room.

Owing to a malfunction of a DBX noise reduction unit, the sound quality of Steely Dan's 1975 album Katy Lied fell below the band's exacting standards of audio perfection. Not only did the band refuse to listen to the final product, but they issued a formal apology printed on the sleeve of the album. However the band felt, music critics exalted the album's crisp, clean sound. Thirty-five years later, Katy Lied remains revered for its sonic achievements.

As a precautionary measure intended to protect myself from an unexpected blow to the kidneys, it's time to issue my own apology. What a dreadful sounding record! No technical malfunction occurred during the making of this record, and yet we still managed to emerge from the Hussalonia lair brandishing this cochlear assault. However, listening back, it occurs to me now that I might have succeeded in finally bridging the gap between the world's Steely Dan lovers and the Steely Dan haters. Here, the two parties may finally shake hands in a brotherly union, peacefully united in their mutual disdain for this record of Steely Dan covers.

I'm sorry. Now enjoy.

> This much is true, in my case

Here, the two parties may finally shake hands in a brotherly union, peacefully united in their mutual disdain for this record of Steely Dan covers.

> Patently false, as I kinda love it. I shudder to think how far [the founder] might be able to drag me into musical territory I'm not comfortable with. (Now there's an improbable thought, a Shudder to Think cover EP).

-- villain, who must evermore qualify his dislike of Steely Dan, not to mention Billy Joel's "Glass Houses"

Review:

Interesting arrangements and great selection of songs. I would have really liked to hear the mixes with WAY less guitar, as there are some other cool parts that get completely obliterated when it's in (see: Dirty Work). Still, a solid effort overall and nice addition to my collection. Thanks.
